Weekday Escape

GrinnypIt's time for a mid-week relaxation break, and in the world of room escape games there's nothing more relaxing than Tomatea. Well, relaxing if you can figure out their puzzles, that is, and this time Tomatea has come up with a doozy of an escape in After Rain, a game that will simultaneously soothe and frustrate you at the same time, which is quite a feat.

After RainWhat happens after rain? If you're thinking floods or mud you'd be right, but not on the right track, at least with this room escape gem. After it rains, if you're really lucky, a rainbow will appear, and that's the phenomenon that After Rain is about. As you might imagine, this is not a game for the colorblind, as nearly every puzzle involves color to some degree. However, if you're not frightened off by the numerous hues and shades that permeate this charming room, then you're in for a delightful treat that is a feast for the eyes and the brain. Navigate by the usual arrows, find things with the lighted changing cursor, solve a ton of color puzzles, and you too can enjoy the refreshing feeling of going out after the rain and enjoying the wonder of mother nature.

Tomatea has outdone themselves with this amazing and delightful little game, packed full of use of found objects, letter puzzles, number puzzles, and some other treats that we won't spoil. It's time to dive into this amazing new room escape and, well, taste the rainbow (yes, the pun had to be made, shut up!).

After Rain Walkthrough

General Information

  • Don't forget to examine everything you pick up. Items can be hiding clues.

  • Almost every puzzle has a color element to it. This walkthrough will have directions for the colorblind where possible.

  • There is only one ending.

  • Good luck!

Exploration

  • You begin facing a wall with a lot of stuff. There's a window, a birdhouse, a shelving unit, counters, a cubby, and two sets of cabinet doors.

  • Click on the birdhouse for a close up. Once the birdhouse is in close up click on the two small green squares near the top of the birdhouse. Apparently this is a right/left puzzle. Back up.

  • Below the birdhouse, on the counter, are three apples, click on them for a close up.

  • The three apples are different colors. From left to right the apples are: red, yellow, and green. From left to right their leaves are green, red, and yellow. From left to right their stems are yellow, green, and red.

  • To the left of the apples is a tile, take it (1 of 16). Back up.

  • To the left of the counter is a set of cabinet doors, click on them for a close up.

  • To the right of the doors is a tile, take it (2 of 16).

  • You can click on each of the cabinet doors. The left door has a puzzle involving shapes and colors. The right door has a puzzle involving numbers and colors. Back up.

  • Directly underneath the window is a notch in the cabinets that has a flower in a planter. Click on it for a close up.

  • To the left of the flower is a tile, take it (3 of 16). There is also an object in the planter, take it (green pencil).

  • Pull up the green pencil from your inventory and click on it to turn it around. Note the word gReen and the number 5 on the end. Close down the pencil and back up.

  • On the counter to the right of the window are two baskets, click on them for a close up.

  • In the right basket is another tile, take it (4 of 16). Back up.

  • Click on the shelving unit to the right for a close up. There are five blue figurines of birds, either facing right or left. Note that each shelf also has coins. Back up.

  • Below the shelving unit is another set of cabinet doors, click on them for a close up.

  • The left cabinet door has a seven digit lock involving colors and a clue picture above.

  • The right cabinet door has a five letter code lock. Back up.

  • Turn right.

  • You are now facing a wall with a couch and a clock on the wall. Click on the couch for a close up.

  • Underneath the couch is another tile, take it (5 of 16). Back up.

  • If you click on the clock on the wall, you will see that it is missing hands. Back up.

  • To the right of the couch are two green boxes, click on them for a close up.

  • Once the boxes are in close up you will see another tile, to the right of the floor lamp. Take the tile (6 of 16).

  • Click on the top of the smaller green box to open it. Inside is a blue box, take it. Back up.

  • If you pull up the blue box from your inventory and click on it, you will see that it needs a four letter code that also involves colors. Close the box and back up.

  • Turn right.

  • You are now facing the wall with the door out. The door is locked, of course.

  • To the right of the door is a large 3 x 3 grid on the wall, click on it for a close up.

  • If you click on each cell of the grid, you will notice that it changes colors. All of the cells start out green, and change to red and yellow as well. Back up.

  • There is an easel to the right of the wall grid, click on it for a close up.

  • Leaning against the blank canvas of the easel is another tile, take it (7 of 16). Back up.

  • Click on the stool in front of the easel for a close up. Once you are in close up, there is another tile on the floor, in the back corner, take it (8 of 16).

  • Back up and turn right.

  • On this wall there is a shelf of books. Below the shelf is a low footstool. Click on the footstool for a close up.

  • Once in close up you can take the tile sitting on the footstool (9 of 16).

  • On the shelf of books there is one with a spine that is light blue with a faint red line around it. Hover your cursor along the shelf until it glows and then click to get a close up of the book.

  • Once the book is in close up, click on the cover to open it.

  • The first page has a picture of a rainbow with a bow and arrow pointing at it. Click on the page to turn it.

  • The next page has some basic color mixing. Yellow + red = orange, yellow + blue = green, and red + blue = purple. Click on the page to turn it.

  • The next page has a tile on it, take it (10 of 16).

  • Back up and turn right. You are now back where you started.

  • Time to solve some puzzles!

The Birdhouse

  • Let's start with the left/right puzzle on the birdhouse.

  • Where in the room have we seen birds? Could they be a clue?

  • There are blue birds in the shelving unit to the right, some facing left, some facing right.

  • It's not that simple, however.

    • On each shelf with a bird are some coins.

    • The coins are a secondary clue. The coins indicate how many clicks each direction should have.

    • For instance, the top shelf has a bird facing to the left, and 2 coins. This indicates two left clicks.

    • From top to bottom, the sequence is: 2 left clicks, 3 right clicks, 1 left click, 1 right click, and 2 left clicks.

  • Click on the birdhouse for a close up.

  • Click on the two green squares near the top to pull up the left/right button puzzle.

  • Click the buttons in the sequence indicated by the bird clues, then click the smaller button below.

  • If you enter the sequence correctly, the door to the birdhouse will open. Take the object from inside, a tile (11 of 16).

  • Back up.

The Green Grid

  • Turn left (or right) twice to face the wall with the door leading out.

  • Click on the green 3 x 3 grid on the wall for a close up.

  • When we first looked at this, we noticed that each "cell" of the grid changes color when clicked. They go from green to red to yellow and back to green.

  • Now we just need to figure out what color sequence we need to make the cells.

    • We have seen something in the room that encompasses both the colors (green, yellow, and red) and the 3 x 3 concept, the apples below the birdhouse.

    • Each apple has 3 distinct colors, the stem, the leaf, and the apple itself.

    • For the top row, use the colors from the stems of the apples, yellow, green, and red. For the colorblind, click the top left cell twice, don't click the middle top cell, and click the top right cell once.

    • For the middle row use the colors from the leaves, green, red, yellow. For the colorblind: don't click the left middle cell, click the middle cell once, and the right middle cell twice.

    • For the bottom row use the colors from the apples: red, yellow, and green. For the colorblind: click the bottom left cell once, the bottom middle cell twice, and don't click the bottom right cell.

  • If you set up the grid correctly, it will open, revealing another tile (12 of 16). Take the tile and back up.

The Right Side Cabinet

  • We now have the clues to open both of the doors on the cabinet on the right side (the one below the blue birds shelving unit).

  • Turn right or left twice to face the wall with the cabinets.

  • Click on the right cabinet for a close up.

  • Click on the left door of the cabinet to pull up the lock.

  • Note the clue above the code lock. It's a picture of rain, and a picture of a bow.

  • Is this a clue to the lock?

    • It is indeed a clue, it's a rebus.

    • The pictures stand for one word, "rainbow".

    • The code is the colors of a rainbow, from left to right.

    • If you don't remember the colors, you can see them on the rainbow in the book. The colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue (light blue), indigo (dark blue), violet.

    • For the colorblind: the buttons start at orange. From left to right click the buttons: 1) 1 time, 2) none, 3) 6 times, 4) 5 times, 5) 3 times, 6) twice, 7) 4 times.

  • Once you've entered the color code, click on the small button beneath the code. If you did it correctly the cabinet door will open.

  • Take the items from inside, a tile (13 of 16), and the blue pencil.

  • Pull up the pencil from your inventory and click on it to turn it around. Note the word "Blue" and the number 3.

  • Close down the pencil.

  • Now click on the right cabinet door to pull up the right door code lock.

  • This lock involves a five letter code.

  • Note the arcs below the code, where the small button is.

  • This is part of the clue to the solution of the puzzle.

    • The arcs look like a rainbow without the colors.

    • We've seen a rainbow in the room, in the blue book on the shelf.

    • Remember what was below the rainbow in that picture, a bow and arrow.

    • The answer to the clue is "arrow". Use the arrows above or below to change the letters to spell arrow.

  • Once you've entered the code, click on the small button below the puzzle.

  • If you entered the code correctly, the cabinet will open. Take the objects from inside.

  • Inside you will find a red pencil (reD and the number 4 on the end), and the clock hands.

  • Once you have the items back up.

The Clock

  • Turn right to face the couch.

  • Click on the clock for a close up.

  • Use the hands on the clock. Once they are placed they will start to move.

  • Look closely, each hand moves in a specific way.

  • The hour hand (the red hand) stops every 120 degrees, so it stops 3 times in its circuit around the clock face.

  • The minute hand (the green hand) stops every 90 degrees, so it stops 4 times in its circuit around the clock face.

  • The second hand (the yellow hand) never stops, it just keeps circling.

  • Back up and turn left.

  • Click on the left set of cabinet doors for a close up.

  • Once in the close up, click on the left door lock to see the puzzle.

  • The clock has given you the clue to solve this 3 shape/color puzzle.

    • The hour hand (red) stopped 3 times, which indicates a 3 sided shape, thus the first code is a red triangle.

    • The minute hand (green) stopped 4 times, indicating a 4 sided shape, so the middle code is a green square.

    • The second hand (yellow) never stopped, indicating a circle, so the right code is a yellow circle.

    • For the colorblind: the buttons all start on the yellow triangle. Click the left button once, the middle button eight times, and the right button three times.

  • Once you've entered the code, click on the smaller button below the puzzle to open the cabinet.

  • Take the objects from inside the cabinet, the tile (14 of 16) and the yellow pencil (yelloW and the number 2 on the bottom).

The Right Door of the Left Cabinet

  • You should still be zoomed in on the left cabinet.

  • Click on the right door of this cabinet to see the code key.

  • This code involves colors and 4 numbers.

  • The colors on the lock are, from left to right: orange, blue, yellow, purple.

  • There are two clues for this puzzle in the room, the pencils (and the numbers on the ends of the pencils) and the blue book.

    • The numbers for the code are indicated by the colors on the lock. Some of the numbers are just the numbers on the ends of the pencils, some are a combination of the two colors that make that color.

    • The first number is on the orange spot, so the number is a combination of red (4) and yellow (2), as red + yellow = orange. Thus the first number is 6.

    • The second number is blue, which is 3.

    • The third number is yellow, which is 2.

    • The fourth number is purple, which is red + blue (4 + 3 = 7).

    • Therefore the code is 6327.

  • Once you've entered the code, click on the small button to open the cabinet.

  • Inside the cabinet you will find a tile (15 of 16) and a white pencil (white with the "I" capitalized and the number 1). Take both and back up.

The Blue Box

  • Time to open the blue box.

  • Pull up the blue box from your inventory.

  • Click on the top of the blue box to see the code key.

  • This is a four digit clue involving colors and letters.

  • From left to right, the colors on the lock are blue, white, green, and red.

  • What clues do we have left?

    • The clues are on the colored pencils, on the ends.

    • In this case it's not the numbers, but the capitalized letters on the ends of the pencils.

    • On the blue pencil, the capitalized letter is B.

    • On the white pencil, the capitalized letter is I.

    • On the green pencil, the capitalized letter is R.

    • On the red pencil, the capitalized letter is D.

    • That spells out BIRD, which is the code for the lock.

  • Enter the code for the lock, then press the button below the code to open the box.

  • Inside you will find the last tile (16 of 16) and an eraser. Take them both.

  • Once you've taken both of the items the box will disappear from your inventory.

Getting Out

  • Turn right (or left) twice to face the wall with the door.

  • Click on the white easel for a close up.

  • Once the easel is in close up, use the tiles on it to trigger the puzzle.

  • This is a basic "swap the pieces" puzzle. When you have put all of the tiles in the proper places you will get a picture of birds, a birdhouse, and apples with a tree in the background.

  • Here's a screenshot of the completed puzzle.

  • Now that the puzzle is complete (it will say "completed" if you did it correctly), it's time to color the puzzle to complete it.

  • The clues for the colors are found around the room. The birdhouse, the apples, the birds, and the counter should be colored the same as the ones in the room.

  • Color each area by using the proper color pencil on it.

  • Both birds should be colored blue.

  • The birdhouse and the counter below the apples should be colored white.

  • The apples should be, from left to right, red, yellow, and green.

  • The small squares and the ledge of the birdhouse should be green.

  • Here's a screenshot of the completed puzzle.

  • If you color everything in correctly the little green doors will open, revealing a key.

  • Take the key and back up.

  • Click on the door for a close up.

  • Use the key on the door.

  • Taste the rainbow!

Oh, man. This rainbow tastes relaxing and frustrating. Help!

This comment is literally, "for the birds" --

where would those birds live?

and are they leaving us a trail of bread crumbs?

Well, that was surprisingly simple but pretty fun.

For something that's surprisingly simple, I'm surprisingly stuck. :(

I can't figure out the code to the leftmost cupboard. I know it has to do with the clock, and since the red hand moves in increments of 4, the green of 3, and the yellow never stops, it should be red rectangle, green triangle, yellow circle. And I tried it in order from shortest hand to longest, and vice versa. None of those let me open the door.

lavamuffin January 25, 2012 2:44 AM

mmm, apple snacks!

how many apples?

how many parts on each apple?

what else in the room has similar parts?

Reply

@Themepark:

Rather than the numerical increments, note how many corners the hands are making. You're over-complicating the simple. ;)

ThemePark:

Are you sure that green is 3 and red is 4?

In my game, red was 3 (triangle), green was 4 (square), and yellow was infinity (circle).

Can't figure out the combination to the rightmost cabinet.

Does it have something to do with the pictures in the book? The rainbow and... other bow? The color combinations?

I tried doing the first letters of all the colors (second-to-last being indigo and last being violet). Didn't work.

So confused.

Themepark,

Think less in terms of increments and more in terms of angles.

lavamuffin January 25, 2012 3:01 AM

@ nerdypants

did you try reading the book?

anything in the book that might match the number of letters?

anything else besides the bow?

lavamuffin January 25, 2012 3:11 AM

what's the deal

with coloring in the tile drawing?

tried "realistic colors," but that didn't work.
tried coloring by number (in order), but that didn't work, either.

what am i overlooking?

For those wondering about the colors on the lock of the right side of the right-hand cabinet...

The colors are actually relevant. If you line up the letters in "RAINBOW" with the colors of the rainbow (as ordered in the left side of the same cabinet), you get Red = R, Orange = A, Yellow = I, Green = N, Cyan = B, Blue = O, Purple = W. Using those correlations on the lock, you get: Orange = A, Red = R, Red = R, Blue = O, Purple = W, or ARROW. Of course, if you simply try "ARROW" based on the picture in the book -- which is what I did at first -- that works too.

Out without walkthrough! though did need pointers from the comments for the clock. I like the way Tomatea lets you know if you're ready to solve a puzzle.

I'm a big fan of Tomatea's. Everything a good escape game should have: changing cursors, music on/off button, clever, interesting puzzles which haven't been rehashed a million times, and lovely settings. A save function would be nice, but the games are short enough this doesn't bother me. I do feel that this game sold a few of it's (very clever) puzzles short by over-hinting:

for example, forcing the player to do some maths and figure out the numbers that correspond to all the rainbow colours with only the red, blue, and green pencils, would be cool. The yellow pencil wasn't really necessary at that stage.
And also, the diagram with the bow and arrow pointing at the rainbow was a little too obvious. Especially when you realise that the colours of the letters on the

"arrow"

lock link the word rainbow to the colours in order - roygbiv - to hint towards the word arrow (a clue I really really liked)

but these are minor details, and this is still an excellent game.

Five shroomies for this one. I always rate 'em high when I can finish them without the walkthrough AND they aren't a walk in the park. Good stuff.
