I mean it is not accurate in any way. Decipher that as you wish.
As a fun added bonus... on the homepage it says the article for "Fear for Sale: Phantom Tide" has been read 124 times but when I clicked on the article it says it has been read 14 times.
Regardless of which number is closer to the truth it is impossible to know how many times an article has actually been read.
The views in the homepage are in real time because we need to refresh only 15, the views in the reviews themselves are refreshed every hour (like the 'Most popular reviews this month' widget) because we can't refresh in real time more than 10k articles. So you absolutely did not find any kind of bonus despite your deep feeling to think to have found one.
Also, having the number of plays for the hosting games was something asked by many developers for tracking the popularity of their games.
I hope my answers fit your big worries/troubles.
Can someone other than Jeff please start responding to these things? He seems to take everything personally.
No, that didn't answer my "big worries/troubles". I never had a "deep feeling" about finding a bonus. Even now the numbers differ from homepage to review page and unless you expect people to already know about your refresh rates then perhaps it is somethings to consider fixing. Or keep contradicting information. Maybe change the mushroom votes to be different numbers too. I don't care.
My point (which keeps getting missed) is that you can not know how many times an article has been read. I can click as many links as I like and not read a word. Two people could read an article together on one computer.
I could accidentally click something... My accidental click is then counted as someone having read the article. Just because I hold a book in my hands doesn't mean I have read it.
"Also, having the number of plays for the hosting games was something asked by many developers for tracking the popularity of their games."
This has nothing to do with anything I have mentioned. At all. It doesn't say how many times a game has been played. It says how many times an article has been read.
Inaccurately.
Dora... help! Ima go smack my head against a wall in the meantime.
@Dandy, you should read again your messages and analyse who takes personally the things and who uses a rude tone.
I will remember to not answer you in the future, to be honest I will win time because yes answering takes time (even a sunday) and you even do not take this matter in consideration.
And about the fact we can't know by the views if the visitor has read or not, well how to say? yes you're right we are not behind the persons to know that but it's obvious no? The number of the views is an indicator to quantify the popularity of the different articles, it's a widget not created by us but common on any blog.
But I will take your comment in consideration and will replace the text by 'The article has been consulted'.
Hello, Dandy,
It sounds like you have a problem with the wording. Of course you're right that you can't tell whether someone has actually read an article or not, or how many people are reading it on a computer, or even if I'm psychically beaming the information to you. :) Maybe "viewed" would be a more accurate turn of phrase? As far as Jeff's responses about the plays, I believe his point was that especially in cases where we can't host a game, seeing how many times an article has been viewed is helpful to a developer because it helps measure interest in their game, and it's helpful to US because it helps us gauge what our readers are interested in, what's popular, and so forth. As he said, because the feature is new, it's only started tracking since it was implemented... a few days ago. :)
Obviously, everything we add to the site is a work in progress because we're constantly trying and tweaking new things... you will see things come and go and change as we try to figure out the best way to implement things using the service our site is hosted on. We try multiple ways of implementing the same feature as we try to figure out what works best for both the reader AND our site's functionality.
I think both you and Jeff keep misunderstanding one another due to simple communication errors, so hopefully everyone can take a breath and keep things civil. I'm sure you can understand someone being defensive when they've been working hard to try to make improvements on something, and I believe the issue here is that, much like you believe Jeff is taking things personally, he's reading your tone as combative rather than constructive because it sounds like you're taking his responses personally, too. I know you're a long time reader and you have our best interests at heart, and we value EVERYONE'S constructive criticism.
I just want everyone to understand that tone does not carry well on the internet in the best of times, much less when trying to deliver criticism, (especially to someone whose native language is not English, which means the tone further gets muddied both ways!) and we should all take a deep breath and remember that we all want the same things. Games, coffee, ponies, and an infinity pool.
I apologise if I came off rude, I have a dry sense of humour and forget that it doesn't always translate. To me "fun added bonus" is more entertaining to say than "also". I write how I speak in real life. I did apologise for my query and say I was being pedantic when I asked my original question.
It gets tiresome having to repeat yourself though when the person you're talking to isn't understanding what you're saying. Just like the problems with the adblock discussion I think perhaps Jeff should consult other people first or get other people to reply on his behalf. On one hand JiG encourages people to communicate issues, on the other hand the guy behind the complaints desk is giving me the stink-eye.
I understand that this pageview counter is a new feature that has been implemented recently and there are bugs to be ironed out. That's why I gave feedback. I'm not going to wait a year and see if it still irritates me. Rather than come in all guns blazing and demand anything be fixed, I asked a simple question about it because for all I knew there might have been an answer I hadn't thought of.
Changing 'read' to 'viewed' would make sense and be accurate. If it's to benefit the game designers then maybe it might be an idea to only have the number on the game page. I can't imagine the discrepancy between both numbers is going to aid any designer.
Thanks for mediating Dora. Coffee-ponies for everyone! I had to Google Infinity Pools and they look like scary things without boundaries that involve swimming trunks, physical exertion and being eaten by the ocean. I shall take no part in this madness.
I'll go back to lurking and avoid the suggestions box again for a while.
Let's talk "read more". Boy, do I hate it.
I can get your argument that you want to safe space, perhaps bring more games to the front page, etc. But as you sayed yourself, this is a review site. Your visitor's main concern are the games obv. but they can get them from any run-of-the-mill link-site, the reason they come here is for the reviews, which they want to read, which they can't because they have to click a link first, which even doesn't bring them to the game itself, just another page, which might increase your ad-sales, which is not so okay, which brings me to the last point.
The "read more"-link also breaks your game-sites because now it's not possible to play a bit and refer to the review because only parts are shown below the game and clicking the link will nefariously redirect me to another part of this maze you call a website, which in turn often resets any process done in the game itself.
The last thing just happened to me, so please excuse my french. The argument nevertheless is still valid.
Hi KMB,
While I understand your frustration, it seems like you're also misunderstanding how the site works. Our game pages have ALWAYS only displayed a short excerpt below them that just functions as a simple description of the game. Clicking "read more" takes you to the full review, not some other crazy maze segment, which sounds like what you want to begin with, though it also sounds like that link needs to open in a new window to avoid taking you off the game page. :)
As for your other points about people coming here for the reviews, well, to be frank, as much as we'd love to agree, we've heard it both ways. During the recent discussion on Ad Blockers, we had scores of people inform us they didn't even bother to read the reviews and would simply play a game just by virtue of it being recommended by us, often citing the fact that they only scan the first paragraph at most. Rather than cutting our reviews, we chose to change the way the main page (and ONLY the main page) displays each recent review, which allows us to fit more games in a tidier format... and should even cut down on loading time for people on slower connections since they aren't loading all the extra screenshots and review images, unless they click to read an article they're interested in. And, as I said, a game's review page always displays the full article... it's only set to "read more" when displaying on the main page. :)
We can't please all of the people all of the time, but we're continually working to find compromises for both groups... the people who just want to play the games, and the people who actually want to read our wordstuffs. Some people will love these changes, others... not so much. It's bound to happen. To address your concern of the "read more" link "breaking" a game page, however, I'll see if Jeff can make that open in a new page or tab, which should eliminate the problem you're having. :)
I think the main reason I don't like the recent change is the fact that - like in a maze - you can twist and turn and find three different ways to read the same words over and over (right now the first paragraph of the review).
"which allows us to fit more games in a tidier format..."
Nothing speaks generally against this, but as today's Weekday Escape shows this can be a bad idea, because today - and this was a wtf moment for me - I had to click on the review to get to the links to the games itself. A lesser strict use of the "read more"-tool would have been preferred.
And to get back to the maze-argument:
What would a new user think if he stumbled upon /games/category/new and /all-games/ and archives.php and /browser/all-games/ after s/he visitited the index-page for the first time? It also looks like you need to write three different blurbs for each game. Sounds like fun...
Hi KMB,
I confess, I'm not sure what you mean by your example with your "maze argument". All of the pages you list seem self explanatory to me. Why would they be confused after viewing the main page, then https://jayisgames.com/games/category/new (which displays all of our hosted games, just like our portal does), https://jayisgames.com/all-games/ (which displays all of our reviews), https://jayisgames.com/browser/all-games/ (browser games only, no downloads or mobile), and https://jayisgames.com/archives.php which is simply a listing of everything we've ever covered, ordered by month and writer? Each of those pages servers a different function, which should be immediately clear upon viewing the title. I don't really understand how that can be so baffling. These listings haven't actually changed with the new "read more" format, or even the new site design either.
As far as Weekday Escape goes, yes, there will be times when you have to click through to the article to have to see the games. Since Weekday Escape and Link Dump Friday are the only two articles where that would happen, I don't think that's particularly unreasonable, and not having every article adhere to a single format seems a little sloppy to me. An easy way for you to get around this is to simply bookmark one of those pages you mentioned (such as https://jayisgames.com/all-games/) and use that as your main page to navigate directly to the review and games as they appear. :)
As far as having to write two separate descriptions for each game, each consisting of just a few lines, well, I like to think I'm up to the burden of an extra twenty seconds of work. ;) We have always done this, with an excerpt for each game's listing and review, so this is not a new thing. For myself, if the opening paragraph is one I've read in the excerpt, it's not a hassle to scroll past it to the next.
As I said, this site will always be a work in progress as we try to find what works best for us in order to deliver our content. We won't be able to make everyone happy, but we'll take all the criticism into consideration as we move forward.
My opinion is:
The new homepage with 'Read more' for reading the full review allows us to display more reviews on the homepage with 15 instead of 12. Also, the homepage looks clearer for me and looks like more than a typical blog.
As Dora said, displaying 'only' the first paragraph, is something for which some people should enjoy because they did not read the full review anyway and had to scroll a lot to find their interests. Also for people who want to play the games after just reading the first paragraph, the tip is to click on the large image of the game.
As Dora said too, the purpose is to make everyone happy.
From what you said KMB, I agree with you for Weekday Escape. We should make an exception for it and you can find it now as before.
Regarding reading again the first paragraph when you click on a 'Read more' in the homepage, it's something we could change. I mean we can define to go directly to the second paragraph, for instance:
https://jayisgames.com/archives/2014/04/night_lights_after_dark.php#more
I would like to have some other feedbacks to know if it would be better or not?
So now for the 'Read more' on a game page. Yes, if you click on it, it redirects to the full review so the page is changed. We can open the link in a new tab, I think it would be better. But it will be complicated for us to display the same full text of a review in a game page.
It's for this reason, you noticed, the descriptions in the game pages are different than the excerpts or the first paragraphs.
Preface: I hope I don't come over as hostile or anything like that (I'm no dandy - scnr). I'm visiting this website since back in the days when Jay carved his reviews in stone and will continue to do so.
Diving in:
"the pages you list seem self explanatory to me."
That's why I mentioned a new user, whcih will wonder why there are games/reviews on some of these pages but not on the other. S/He doesn't know that one are self-hosted and the other are "just" reviews.
"adhere to a single format seems a little sloppy to me."
Your users will thank you, as I do right now with Jeff, although I'm not sure why the "read more" is still visible on the long Weekday Escape post on the start-page. Shouldn't "mt:EntryIfExtended" prevent this?
The #more would do the trick, but it could need more padding to the top, so the text doesn't sit directly under the browser-bars.
"But it will be complicated for us to display the same full text of a review in a game page."
This baffles me. I have no experience with MT and I know that a comparison to WP would be wrong, but even in Perl this looks like it would be solvable.
"the tip is to click on the large image of the game."
You know this, I know this, Dora knows this, but a certain percentage of your visitors have no clue. My suggestion: add a link next to "read more" to get directly to the game. It doesn't have to be huge and orange, but it's definitely be useful to give the users a direct call to action.
Last but not least: "Join the disccussion" links to "#comment-panels", which is not there if there are no comments, while "#comments" (as in "Comments (0)" in the head of a review) works everytime.
You can search for older games in the Archives. Here is the one you are looking to find. https://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/11/robot_wants_jig_banner_game_by_hamumu.php
Enjoy!
It just occured to me, why wasn't there a "Best of 2013"?
https://jayisgames.com/tag/bestof
You always did it since 2004.
Hi cams,
Unfortunately, with the change in ownership and the work we had to put into with the new site design on top of other things, we just didn't have the time to devote to the massive beast that is creating, coding, and promoting a Best of 2013 feature. We'll be doing one next year, but for this year given the time that's passed, we're going to be focusing on other surprises and game-y create-y things for you guys. Cheers!
Hrm...wondering if my browsers are just being weird today, or if some of the more useful drop-downs from the gray menu bar have gone away?
I've been in the habit of making the "Categories->Puzzle" submenu one of my first stops to catch up on JiG, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. In fact, the only submenu I see now is for Support. If I want to see the most recent puzzle games now, I don't see a way to do it apart from going to the Categories page, then the Categories->p page, then scrolling all the way down the list. Or I could just bookmark https://jayisgames.com/tag/puzzle, and probably will, but this seems clunkier than what you had before.
Quick question about submitting a game for review.
When I submit a game should I get some sort of acknowledgment that it has been received? I have submitted one a couple of times, the same game a few months apart but it is like a big black hole.
Anyway, if it is not the case then I would suggest it is a good idea if it could be implemented - I would not want to spam another submission if it had been received and rejected
Thanks
yad
There's a problem with that game BLiX (link right here: https://jayisgames.com/games/blix/ ). For once I thought that game was working at all. But when I click play button from that game the Shockwave have error and caused problems. Now that game did not work at all. Could you look into the link and see what is going on and could you fix that game so that to make sure that game is working again? Please let me know.
Hi yaddab,
Unfortunately, given the volume of game submissions we receive (which can literally be hundreds a day, many from auto-submit "spam" sites), responding to each one individually would take up a LOT of time, though perhaps Jeff could look into an alternate submission form that would provide you with some sort of auto confirmation message. Rest assured that if you fill out the form your game HAS been received, since every submission is automatically dropped into the inbox.
Well I go to that link of that game and I found out that this is a wrong game. Only that game BLiX which is created by Gamelab (see here: https://jayisgames.com/archives/2004/09/blix.php ). Could you bring that old game BLiX back? Because this is the wrong game that I wasn't looking for.
With the removal of the drop down menus it seems there's no way to go to the best games section now. Apart from manualy typing the link or finding it in browser history. (https://jayisgames.com/best-games/)
Is it now replaced with this?
https://jayisgames.com/games/category/new/rating
But the list is completely different. The top games like Shadow of the Colossus (PS2), Transformice, Kingdom Rush HD, Battle for Wesnoth, Amnesia: The Dark Descent doesn't seem to be in the ratings list at all.
Hey, recently went from WinXP to Win8.1, use Firefox with the same privacy settings on each machine. For a game like Cursed Treasure 2, I had no save game troubles on the previous computer, but on the new one, my local saves get deleted - but not immediately. Yesterday I experimented with quitting the game, closing the browser, resetting my computer - nothing erased the save. This morning I ran it again, and the save had disappeared again.
Any suggestions?
Just to let you know we have finished to implement new icons for the games. Next to the Review tab, you could see from a glance, if the game is playable using a browser or/and a mobile or/and a tablet. Hoping you will like that.
Also, we will cover in the future more html5 games. Those games will have an icon too. And if a html5 game has 4 icons including Browser, Mobile, Tablet and Html5, it will mean, it can be played using mobile devices or browsers.
The idea is to launch JiG from an ipad (for instance), look at the html5 games, and be able to play some of them.
In your Walkthrough for The Haunt 2 under the Puzzle Piece spoiler, Item 10 cannot be opened because the website states there is a problem. Can you identify where the Puzzle Pieces are in this location? I followed the list of 99 piece locations and I can only find 98 total puzzle pieces. Thanks.

Thanks to Trinn for the walkthrough!)
Hey there for that game Arcadia (right here: https://jayisgames.com/archives/2005/06/arcadia.php). Does anybody know how many levels are there for that game? Just want to know.
I have been having problems viewing all games from your site; not just those base in Flash, but HTML5 games as well.
A little code spelunking noted an error on the content-wrapper tag, where the "display=none" argument prevents the game from loading.
In example, this is what appears on the code of any game page (using | as a replacement for the greater and less than signs): |div id="content_wrapper" style="display:none;"|. Removing the style="display:none; string and leaving just the following |div id="content_wrapper"| loads the game.
I'm not sure I'm the only one having this problem, but if there are others, this remains here. Hope this (if it is a common problem) gets fixed (as changing the value by hand is tiresome).
Thanks for the reply, Jeff.
I'm currently using Firefox 29.0.1, with Adblock Plus (as far as I know, I don't use a script blocker), although one of the first things I did was to disable it temporarily, which didn't work.
For the time being, I can view all games I've tried (to name a few, Escape from Jay is Games, Last Legacy, Cyber Punkmon, No More Bullets and Golden Krone Hotel). From those games I can state that I no longer have any problems with Flash, HTML5 or Javascript games embedded in your pages.
Hi all. The new ad structure for game loading is causing some issues. I'm currently running on Google Chrome v35.0.1916.114 on an iMac with OSX v10.9.2. Loading screen for games loads the ad above the game and initiates the game load window directly beneath it. Once the ad is complete, the ad window section closes but the game also disappears. A black box appears where the ad was, but the game does not reload.
I switched to Chrome to avoid the disk space problem (above; it seems to have worked) but am now running into the ad problems as well. And reloading/refreshing doesn't always work either; I just tried 5 or 6 times, and I still ended up with either:
1) a split screen, ad on top, game at the bottom. Ad finishes, then nothing happens (white game screen)
or
2) just a white game screen
I'm having the same issue with games not loading on Ubuntu (Linux) with the most recent versions of both Firefox and Chrome, even after updating to the most recent Flash versions. Disabling ad blocking, as others have noted, doesn't solve things. There are errors displaying in the javascript -- "Bolt.RemoveVideo is not a function" seemed to be the relevant one. Oddly, the code looks fine to me. We've noted the problem happening on Jacksmith. I'm not currently able to test other games as it's only the one computer having the issue for us and it's in use at the moment.
This is starting to get really frustrating. I now have:
1) Firefox, in which my saved data gets erased at random and for no apparent reason. I was promised help/feeback on this, but it never came (Jeff?).
2) Chrome, which doesn't load games at all, choosing to only show me ads.
[3) IE, which I'd rather not even touch with a virtual 10 foot pole]
Cleared cache on both browsers multiple times, no effect. Seems I'm not the only experiencing at least one of these problems. I've been coming here for at least seven years now, but am now seriously considering to just throw in the towel. I really like the site, I really like the people running it, but it seems you're growing too big for your own boots.
Some response on the ad issues or a follow-up on the assistance that was promised on the allowed disk space issue would be much appreciated.
Hi LuckyDee! Sorry you're having issues, and I apologize for nobody having gotten back to you. It's not that we've gotten big for anyone's boots... it's that our IT department is literally one single person, and if he's not around to help, the best most of us can do (such as myself) is burp out the usual "try refreshing/clearing caches/updating/etc" until he's free because everyone else on staff is merely a humble word monkey working freelance. :) As you can imagine, with constant e-mails and requests for help in game threads and on the support page, there's always a lot to do, and sometimes something simply gets overlooked or forgotten. I'll pass this along to Jeff directly in an e-mail so he can forward it along to our tech wizard and make sure you get a response. We certainly appreciate all your time and patience, and once again I apologize.
To follow up, I've done some testing myself. I have no issues playing games in the newest version of Chrome, nor Firefox, though I'm on a Windows 7 PC. Have you tried disabling any extensions you might be using for either browser one at a time to see if one of them might be causing the issue? Have you checked to make sure Firefox has space set aside for site caching? (Tools - Options - Advanced)
Hello LuckyDee,
I've tried today to upgrade my windows 8.0 to windows 8.1.
Well what a pain!
During the install, my screen stopped to display something and the install has been stopped. I currently recover the display only through the hdmi port because my laptop screen does not work anymore :(
I've checked and I'm still under windows 8.0 but really I won't insist for windows 8.1.
So, regarding the problems you meet, can you meet them only on JayIsGames?
Dear Dora, Jeff,
Thanks for responding. I understand your situation, although admittedly I'd expected your IT Department, so to speak, to be a little bigger. Regardless of the actual amount of people concerned with IT, you will have seen the same changes in the site and its content over the past seven years as I have, and I'm guessing we can safely agree on the huge increase in complexity of the whole setup. Then, when multiple people are reporting problems with the latest pre-game ad construction - not the easiest topic to begin with - which hardly get any attention in the support section, I can't help but thinking you're losing touch with your crowd on multiple levels, hence my remark about growing too big for your boots. I'm glad you're here to prove me wrong.
Here's a quick summary: I've purchased a new computer, with a brand new OS, installing Firefox and Chrome fresh from the source. I hardly bother with add-ons/plug-ins. I have a total of 5 running under Firefox, of which only 1 makes me wonder what it's doing there (Photo Gallery; the other four are Flash Player, 2 Intel update checkers and another one from Google). Cache is at the standard 350 Mb. I triple-checked all my privacy/security settings with my old system - no differences.
Chrome only lists 1 plugin, even forgets to mention Flash Player. I only installed this recently, and have little prior experience. Like I said, the disappearing data problem doesn't seem to occur with Chrome, although admittedly I haven't been able to check that for over a week now due to the ad problems.
Tried harrassing the Adobe Community with this as well, no cigar. Since I'm not allowed to link to it, just google [Allowed disk space for Flash under Windows 8.1]
I'll do some testing with the add-ons, although even with only 4 to test, this might take some time as the data loss occurs very randomly.
I'd even say you'd be better of tackling the ad problems since more people are reporting this, and it would fix my own problems in one go as well.
Cheers,
Dee
Hi Lucky Dee,
There is actually nothing different about the way we load ads. I have no idea what caused that issue for people, but it's not something I've seen happen since, and at least for one person above who continued the dialogue it seems to have resolved itself! As we constantly work to attempt to improve and optimize the site, there are bound to be temporary hiccups in the design that get ironed out as they come. :) I feel as if going through our archives and posts on every game, not just the support page, you see us working with and helping players wherever we can... even those who choose to harm our site's costs by continuing to use AdBlockers.
(Side note: It always confuses me when people claim our content has changed... I've been here six years and honestly am never really clear on what that means because we don't really do anything differently now than we did when I came on board.)
JayisGames isn't a company... it's a blog with a bunch of freelance writers just as it always has been. Our IT fellow is a recent addition who was brought on after the change in management. As you can imagine, providing individualized support is a tricky thing when there are so many different possible systems set ups and we can't replicate the issue ourselves. It honestly sounds to me as if your computer is wiping all your temporary files each night. Jeff had asked, do you only get the problem with us and not on any other portals such as Armor Games or Kongregate? Doing a bit of Googling, I'm seeing a lot of people reporting issues with the default installation of Flash on Windows 8 computers, so you might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling both the standard Flash program and any plugins you have. Testing an old version of Firefox (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox) is also something you could try. Hopefully the testing on your end yields some fruit!
Hi Dora,
Thanks for the reply. To be honest I only copied the words about the 'latest ad setup' from another comment, and didn't even remotely consider checking the facts. And yeah, I know you and the other people behind the blog are ready, willing and able to provide help at all times - it's just that sometimes, as a customer/client/visitor/whatchamacallit, you need to raise your voice to be heard, and get the talks going. It's not my favorite method of communicating, but as you see, it helps.
And about you being/not being a company, I know your background, but with you/JIG talking about management, staff and revenues, you do make it clear it's not just some happy-go-lucky venture. I've read the rather large story about the use of ads a couple of months ago, and there's a lot of money going around in your blog - I'm not talking profits, but cost/asset-wise. So yeah, you're a blog first and foremost, but there's also the need for you to look after each dollar and cent in order to keep everything running smoothly.
What I mean to say is you have to be careful not to get the EVIL COMPANY image/label, to which ads and the way they sometimes backfire are likely to contribute in the worst possible way.
(As an aside, did anything actually sprout from that ad/revenue discussion?)
To the problems at hand!
1) Firefox/disappearing data: thanks for the advice, I'll try and test all of it. Like I said, the data loss is _really_ random, ranging from hours to days without incident, no connection to rebooting the computer. I have little experience with other sites as of yet, but I'll have a look at those as well.
2) Chrome/ad issues: The thing is, when I switched to Chrome, everything went smooth as possible; then a couple of days in, everything (EVERYTHING) ceased to work. One can't help but thinking something in the site has changed. Have you any idea of what's causing this stuff yet, based on others' experiences as well as my own?
Hi again!
To my knowledge, we have not changed anything on the site as far as ads and the displaying of games goes, so that makes troubleshooting individual problems we can't replicate ourselves even more difficult. I don't have any of the issues you or others are reporting on Firefox OR Chrome on Windows 7 OR on my Vista laptop, for example, so being unable to replicate the problem ourselves is obviously challenging. Hopefully you can try some of the things we've suggested to provide more information, or maybe even stumble into a resolution! For me the thing I'll be most curious about is as mentioned whether you're losing data on other sites as well, or JUST our own.
The biggest thing that came out of the discussion was Jeff's constant attention to trying to tweak the ads and their content. Since the most common complaint was that people objected to some ad they saw, he's been working had to ensure that any ads people object to are removed from our ad provider's rotation, though of course this only works if people actually report them before using it to justify blocking them without a word. ;) You'll also notice that we've also removed most of the ads from everywhere except game pages. Obviously we've been discussing other options like donations and ad-free subscriptions, but since basic site improvements and functionality have to come first before major expansions and changes (which requires a lot of research to minimize the risks when as mentioned ad revenue is what keeps the site afloat, so losing any to a failed experiment is a big deal), the best we can do is to continue to educate people about why ad blockers hurt us and the developers they love, and hope that we can come to a satisfying middle ground until we can make a bigger change.
As a final note, we've never claimed to be a happy go lucky venture. :) Of course this is a blog run primarily by freelancers, but when we talk about management and revenue, the biggest things we're concerned about are a) paying our writers and b) paying for hosting/bandwith. My point is that it's important for people to understand that JiG is not a huge money making corporation with multiple sources of reliable income... it's a blog of freelancers with a games portal attached to it where our sole source of revenue comes from ads, but a lot of people still seem to believe something else is going on. Yes, it's important for us to keep track of dollars and cents, but in the long term we won't be able to make all of the people happy all of the time, so all we can do is keep doing the same things we've always been doing and adapt as best we can when we face trouble.
Every page on JIG is being called a possible phishing site. I know that JIG is awesomeness and not phishing, so I'm telling you about it in case there's some badness going on that you don't know about.

Update:
1) the data loss on Firefox occurs on other sites as well
2) after the last flash update 2 days ago and another cache clearing in Chrome, the ad problem is solved - yay!
So thanks for the feedback on both points; please consider my problems solved, I don't mind turning to different browsers for different sites.
@shipoopie: having no such problems in either browser.
Hi shipoopie, whose name I will never not giggle while typing. (Family Guy reference, by the way?) :) We appreciate the heads up. We've seen this problem appear on Chrome with other users recently, and it seems very sporadic... my husband's PC never encountered it no matter how often he refreshed, for example, and I had it happen to me once, and that was it. Another user reported it going away on its own. We're keeping an eye on the issue.
Hi guys...I'm having some sort of problem with loading the front page of the site. It just stops responding, and freezes my entire browser, I have no idea why. I can search for and get into every other page with no problem, but I can't see the main page at all, or I can see it, I guess, but I can't USE it. And to get out of it, I have to shut down my browser entirely.
Hello! Sorry you're having issues. Have you made sure your browser is updated, and that flash is updated as well? You might also want to try clearing your browser's cache. If you use any add-ons and plug-ins, you might try disabling them one by one to see if they're interfering. Is it only our site you're having trouble with?
Hello everyone! I also posted a similar question on the Rob Allen Banner Game page (the original blog from August 2007), so I won't give my full explanation again here; I was just wondering if the web administrators (Jeff?) are still working on a way to host the old banner games (specifically the Rob Allen works) on the site once again. I would love to play them again for nostalgic reasons!
Also please note that we track the article views and the number of plays of the games only since the latest days.
