Everyone, thanks so much for all your kind words. As you can imagine, this was no fun at all for me to wake up to hear and have to write. I'm sort of... processing things right now, which is code for "I may have just bought an irresponsible amount of pizza and set up Bob's Burgers on Netflix for the next nine hours". I'm so flattered to hear you guys say such nice things about me, and humbled to have been able to give you all any sort of entertainment over the years.
I don't know what the future will bring. If you'd like to be notified if I do anything, I guess I can set up an e-mail list? You can send an e-mail to doraarewrites AT gmail DOT com requesting to be notified when I do anything. I may or may not have one half of a two part novella I've been sitting on completed for a while now, and maybe this is a sign. Maybe I'll do other stuff. Do people still become highwaymen? Can anyone loan me a mask and a horse?
Anyway. It's a really heavy day for me. I feel privileged to have been a part of so many lives, however small, and you guys are making it a lot easier on me. So. Thanks.
Sad news. I've been lurking here for eight years, although I've had less free time for the last few. "En Ripe Ophthalmou," as the Ancients said.
I unfortunately do not have any horses that I'm allowed to loan out. I can, however, hook you up with a high-quality domino mask. We're talking black silk, sequins, the whole shebang.
I haven't commented here before, and I haven't been on the site in many years, but I used to be a very regular reader many years ago. I'm in college now and I remember being in middle school and playing room escape games from this site with my sister. I'm going to miss this place.
I wish the writers luck in what they are going to do next, and thank you for the memories.
I have been around for a while before I made this account and it has been years and years since I have even logged into this account to post anything. Even then I have come to this site every day and discovered my obsession with escape games and all these cool games I would have otherwise not known about. It is thanks to the hard work of all the staff that this site has continually been my favorite. Thank you for being the best and introducing me to amazing games all these years.
I'm also a long time mostly-lurker come to bid farewell. I must have commented about fives times, once every few years, and even saw some submissions featured (well, 2 out of 3)! I will miss JIG dearly. I am at least very glad you decided to keep the existing archives up.
If I may venture my own theory, I think the development of the mobile market was/is a big part of the decline in browser games. But because of the centralized Stores, a very small piece of the cut is left for affiliate revenue from sites like this one. Its also a bit unfortunate that JIG went from being based in the US to based in France, where taxes are inordinately high.
I didn't learn about the site sale until this post. For others who are curious, look up the post.
JayisGames, Ads, The Future, and You
Other than the post itself, I found these comments especially enlightening.

I'm now suprised (and glad) the site survived two and a half more years.
I'm going to end on happy note from Dora's initiative and list some of my favourite games I found through JIG (in no particular order).
- RPG Shooter Starwish
- World's End
- Dragondot
- Mofuya Defense
- Plupon
- House of Dead Ninjas
- Oliver & The Basilisks
- Synopsis Quest Deluxe
- Save the Date!
- Monomaze
- Tontie
So much time wast- erm, well spent on all of these!
JiG has been part of my daily routine for many years. Right after my home page, this was my next stop. I discovered so many fun little gems here. The roster of sites I visit daily has changed, and JiG was really the only constant.
Gosh, what now? I'm at a loss.
I wish you all the best moving forward. I know you'll do great things wherever you end up.
What? No.. NO!
This is going to take a while to digest. JiG has been a part of my daily snack since 2006. I can't believe it's gone.
Thank you, all, for having made my life a little more fun every day for ten years.
Dora: you will be terribly missed. I always read your reviews, even if I played the game or not. Your sparkling personality shines through every line and letter. I wish the very, very best for you, and I'm signing up for updates immidiately.
All the best.
M
Having had a couple of completely unappreciated and over-taxing webpages I've run in the past, I have always had a special place in my heart for Jay and his site (thought I never quite understood why he IS games...)
Anyway, I don't know how soon I got here, but I remember the game design contests waaaaaaay back in the beginning, and that is actually what brought me here was the very first one. And I have to say, those games were really, really good puzzle games, and I imagine if you could find them they still are very good. Bonte was one of the first regular contributors to the site, as well as another guy who always built math type games who's name escapes me, but I digress. My point is, I really really miss that part of JiG the most - the indie developers pouring their heart and soul into their games and finding a receptive and grateful audience here at JiG.
As with every thing on the internet now, you have to make money to make it work; JiG is not free to run. I don't know all the background or reasons, but when compared to the competitors sites JiG is just not monetizing like the others, and that is mostly due to outcry from US, the users. That being said, the way that AG and Kong run their sites does not deter me from going there, and I had always thought that JiG would catch up and modernize the site similar to theirs so they could continue to exist, but alas it was not to be.
For all those who are going to be lost without an escape game fix, I found escapegames24 to be a pretty good site with an OK community (obviously not the same as here.) I'm just not sure if they host all the same content creaters JiG did (like Tesshi-e or Tomatea, my faves).
Jay, if you're out there - THANK YOU! I am sorry that your legacy has come to such a sad and inglorious end as I feel your work deserves better, but oh well. Dora et al, thanks for helping keep the site somewhat the same for the past couple of years - you knew the JiG family and earnestly tried to placate us by not changing too much.
Time to browse the archives and see if I can find that first JiG contest...
I’m sitting on my porch in shock with tears running down my face.
I first arrived at JiG in 2005 through a graduate level course on Writing for the Internet. We were assigned to interact with an online piece of art or an online game (and since the game recommended was Samorost, I would argue that I got both), and the link brought me here. I found so much more than Samorost at this site--I found a community of other weird and wonderfuls who argued and bickered and theorized and loved games as much as I do. I found a home and a family.
For most of those years I was an avid reader, player, and commenter; I wrote many a review and sent it in through the old front page system; and then for about a year I was honored to be an official reviewer, a member of the staff. And let me tell you, my reviews here are among my most prized publications. Since 2013, I’ve had to become more of lurker, in part due to health and in part due to life, but I still stop by more than once a week to see “what’s new”.
I fell in love with JiG, with Jay, with Dora, with Jeff, and all the crazy, mixed up animals of the JayIsGames family, and I love you all still, and I will miss you all tremendously. Thank you for eleven amazing years of gaming. And may we all find gaming heaven together some day. I’m pretty sure Mateusz will be coding it.
I’m reading every word of these well wishes and I wish everyone would list their favorite games over the years...here are some of mine:
Samorost
Gemcraft
Monster’s Den
Submachine (seems to be a series trend going on here)
Sonny
Elements: The Card Game
dRive (from one of our old amazing CGDCs)
Ring Pass Not
Tile Factory (another CGDC)
The Codex of Alchemical Engineering
Mike Shadow: I Paid For It
Tiles of the Unexpected
Strike Force Kitty
...and too many more to list.
Sad kitteh face. Much love and well wishes.
I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in feeling like this is the end of an era, in a way. This website has been one of my go-to places for finding interesting, new games, and also a regular hit of room escape goodness, for a very long time now. Even if my interest wasn't piqued by absolutely every game presented, the level of thought and curation that went into the choices and reviews still made it a joy to read. And the frequent discovery of something that I really did enjoy was all the more sweeter for it. Thanks to Jay, Jeff, Dora, and of course all the other contributors over the years, both above and below the "Comments" heading. I haven't posted here in a little while, but I have still been checking in regularly. I'm going through a big change in my life at the moment, and lately JIG has been one of the things that still felt "normal" for me.
I'm sure that it's already clear, but I'll still write it: You shall be missed.
This is quite the sad day to see and read - I've been following JiG for quite a while (maybe 2008?) seeing a whole slew of browser games and mobile games. It's so hard to see a site like this go down just like that - there really is no other site like this out there.
RIP JiG, may you come back when things look better.
So is this really the end? I'm so sad and shocked I don't think I can make anything out of it.
I think I've been around for like 5 or 6 years, since high school, after typing something-something walkthrough for a game I found on Kongregate. In these two years, I've become obsessed with this site. I checked it up almost daily for updates, sometimes just to enjoy the witty writing of the reviewers (especially that of Dora) and commentators. The online community this has grown into is exceptional. This has always been the best place I go to when I'm sad or stressed.
I always wondered why the site is updated that frequently, and why the site is named JayisGames but not DoraisGames, until I read the article linked by JIGuestinator in this comment section today, and realized that maintaining this site is such a tough job.
Dora, Jeff, Jay and other reviewers here will definitely be missed. Gaming will not be the same after you left. And I wish the best for Dora. I believe there's some equivalent for highwayman in Sahari desert, where there's no Internet (gasp!) But for real, with your writing you can definitely shine somewhere else.
Maybe after some time, you guys can make a post and update on your new projects? I've never known what Jay does after the transfer. After you've settled, maybe we can follow your brilliant works in some other way.
Wish you all the best.
I'm one of the lurkers who's posted maybe 5 times in the past however-long I've been lurking around JIG. To say the end of JIG is the end of a bright spot in my life is not overstating things. In fact, it may be understating things.
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all who have ever been a part of this wonderful site, especially Dora. Your reviews have made me laugh many times, sometimes to the point where I was crying. You even managed to make my mom laugh when I read them to her a few times. Admittedly, she had no clue what the heck the game was, but she still thought they were very funny. You have a gift with words, Dora, and I hope very much that you will have an opportunity to use it to brighten other people's lives much as you have brightened mine and many others in the JIG community.
A fond farewell to you all, with all my best wishes and prayers for success wherever life leads each of you,
~Kyttynjirr
And as some others have done, my list (in no particular order) of the favorites I've found on JIG: (I apologize for no links, I don't know how to do those)
Lifeline
The Room
The Room Two
The Room Three
A Matter of Caos: Episode 1, 2, and 3
Suveh Nux
Submachine series
And reviews for many hidden object/casual adventure games
I've been browsing this site since I was in 6th grade, but today was the first day I made an account. I'm only five years late -- sorry I wasn't around to contribute while you were active.
I came here in search of walkthroughs, but stuck around because I found so many wonderful games on here. I loved flash games a lot because I didn't have many friends to play with in person and because my parents wouldn't let me download games to their laptops.
Over time, I stopped visiting as much, and started following individual developers who I admired. Still, coming back today and seeing that this site is closing is a shock. Who will introduce me to new games? Where will I read clever reviews and thoughtful comments?
I've had a wonderful five years here; I'm so thankful for all of the hard work and passion you've put into the site. Please do consider coming back when you can -- I would be so glad to read your reviews again. :)
And since others are doing this as well:
The Fabulous Screech (was first on your list as well!), for the wonderfully heartfelt storytelling and soothing music
No One Has To Die, for being a true puzzler with a great backstory
You Find Yourself In A Room, for being a more unique text based game
Endeavor, for the vast expanse of world and simple charm
Depict1, for being a great, classic, don't-listen-to-the-voice type game
I've checked in here daily since '06. And 2016 has sucked so bad, I need casual games more than ever. I do not accept this. I'm just going to keep whacking this refresh button until the world returns to acceptable non-crummy levels. Without JiG there would be no Submachine or Daymare Town, no Grow, no The Asylum. THE ASYLUM! That's an amazing game! I'd have missed it! Where am I going to find new games like that? Rusty Lake is going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting, now.
This news has made me unreasonably sad.
I've been frequenting Jay is games for the better part of the last ten years, and I've found a treasure trove of gaming gems that I never would have found without this site. This has also been a site with civilized discussion in the comments, a feature that I don't think I've seen on any other site, especially a game related one. This is a site like no other on the internets, and it is a sad day to see it go.
And Dora, if you read this, I have thoroughly enjoyed your witty and humorous reviews, and I've been delighted to see you respond to all kinds of comments with kindness and respect. I wish you the very best.
Thank you, Jay is games, and all who've contributed to it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go weep and rock myself in the corner.
I'm still in a bit of a shock over this and a little speechless.
For now, I just want to say, THANK YOU EVERYONE! Thank you Jay and Jeff for bringing this site to life/keeping it alive for so many years, thank you to all the contributors for their witty and insightful posts, thank you to all the game developers who share their talents with us, and thank you to the great community of readers and posters. I'll miss you guys!
I have also been following JiG since the contest days and game banner days. Stopped for a few years when I worked overseas, and was excited to come back to find the site well and alive. Working through escape games with this wonderful community and spoiler tags has been one of the things I look forward to every week for the past 2 years. Like many people on here, checking JiG is a daily routine. Hope to meet you all again on the intertubes! And best wishes to all the contributors!
Since this may be my last change I wanted to write to say thank you.
I found this site a long ago (even if I’m bit unsure of the exact time but mid 00s). I found link to Insaniquarium. After playing that looked around if there was anything else interesting and of course there was. At time I wasn’t very good at english so I couldn't really read the reviews or navigate the site well so I didn’t stink around. After some time I remembered the fun games I played so I looked this site up again and again. Over the years jayisgames has become a big part of my internet routine.
Now days I love the reviews and walkthroughs. This site have helped me to find so many games that I never knew. Game reviews I saw in here helped me to make up my mind back in 2011 to buy first ipad (I love my ipad and play tons of games on it). When I was battling depression I played point and click games from here to cheer up. I excitingly waited for every Weekday Escape and Link Dump Friday. This site has been one of the reasons that I’m a gamer now, why I started to study japanese and why I learned to use photoshop.
I’m sad to see this site go but I’m grateful for all the years of fun and inspiration. Thanks :)
Holy cow. This sucks just as bad as the news of a close family friend passing away.
I'm simply at a loss for words. Here's hoping that the crew lands on their feet elsewhere.
And as long as everyone's naming their favorite games / series -
Submachine
Tesshi-e
Kotorinosu
Bart Bonte
Grow
cogitoergosum
First reaction: Noooooooooo......!!
I join all the others in saying a very heartfelt thank you to JiG for all the pleasure (& quirkiness!) you've provided me with... never had the nerve to comment before, but I so enjoyed seeing familiar names appear in the comments over time. Most especially have I appreciated your quirky, intelligent, well-thought (or amusingly off-the-cuff) reviews & remarks, Dora! One or two comments have led me to believe that you might be located in the GTA here in Canada, which has made me feel somehow connected to you... anyway, thanks & best wishes to you all (I keep hoping this will all be "fixed" by Wednesday--what will I do without the Weekday Escape??)
Oh say you don't mean it!
It was only a few WEEKS ago that I found this site. I fell in love and book-marked it immediately.
I had been trying to work myself up to joining one of the conversations but not one like THIS. sigh.
Everything is so well written--with wit and humor.
I've come here for more information about one game and left with a list of them.
So many of the people who have been here all along have said they will miss you. Well this newbie will too.
I will admit I'm one of the people who don't post much, and as such I only made an account relatively recently, but I do have quite a few years of silent lurking around JIG behind me and I am sad to see it go. It's been great and at least the archive will remain...
The wording leads me to believe there're personal reasons behind this (which is perfectly fine), but the post does mention the option of coming back one day. I think I speak for all here when I say that if that day ever comes, we'll be there with open arms.
Whatever the reasons, I wish everyone at JIG the best of luck, with handling those or otherwise, and thank you for all those years.
I was regularly browsing this site since 2009.
I was really glad the day I saw the To the Moon review, which I worked on.
Jay is Games was my main source of news to discover browser games, which are ignored by almost all the video game press. I recommended this site for years to colleagues and students, to open their eyes on new kind of games. I was even saying that you can't become a great game designer without playing regularly new games coming out on web (and later mobile) platforms, therefore talking about Jay is Games.
Also, I was working so hard to make a browser version of my own project, and hoping to put it here.
It really saddens me to see Jay is Games stopping its updates, as I don't even know of a replacement to discover and talk about browser games.
I hope the best for the whole team, and hope we will see you again somewhere in the future.
Jayisgames is the place where I learned about games likes Eyezmaze's Grown and Toshimitsu Takagi's escape the room games (Viridian Room, Crimson Room).
Jayisgames is the reason I picked up a book on Flash and the reason I wanted to try and create a game myself.
It was 2005, I created my first game and sent Jay an email about it, not expecting anything to come out of it. A day after that, my game was welcomed here with a review and comments that gave me so much courage to make another game.
And so it went on, since then there have 37 game reviews of my games on here each time bringing the biggest smile on my face and empowering me with fresh energy.
My most succesful game series all have an origin here on Jayisgames: the original 'Factory Balls' was made for the 'ball physics' JIG Casual Gameplay Design competition 4, 'Sugar, Sugar' was created for CGDC8 (but I didn't finish in time so I didn't enter).
So basically, what I want to say, without Jayisgames, there would probably not have been any Bonte games.
Thank you Jayisgames, thank you for covering my games since day 1, thank you for the love and passion with which you have been documenting a whole era of webgames.
You will be thoroughly missed...
I've been curating (not reviewing) webgames on my bontegames blog since 2007, so JIG readers, come and have a look if you're on the look for new casual fun and puzzle type browser games.
Oh, and I have a new game coming out in 10 days, but... who's going to review it now the day after?
I suffer from depression. It's under control now, but at my lowest point one of the few things I found pleasure in was escape games. JiG became my go-to spot for them.
I don't feel depressed because of this event, but it is going to leave a hole.
From a strictly support perspective, I'm worried this will go from "no updates" to "not there."
I wish I were a billionaire so I could give the site a cash transfusion.
You'll be missed.
So, having been a long time regular visitor and some times poster, this is really going to change my life. JIG is a part of my daily routine and has been since 2007. I would come here every night after work and enjoy a nice "escape" from reality. Weekends were the best because I could look forward to catching up on all the new games from the week I couldn't play during the week. I particularly remember a Christmas day when we were snowed in and after opening gifts with the family sitting down and playing all the way through Kingdom Rush.
Escape games were the best and without this site I wouldn't have found M.O.T.A.S., Sub-Machine, Samrost, Happy Escape, Daymare Town, Cube Escape, Escape Men, Nekra Psaria, The Asylum, on and on. It's really starting to sink in that this will create a big hole in my life. Who would have thought that a game blog would be so impactful.
Thanks for EVERYTHING! You guys were the best and really were important to a lot of us. I will miss all of it. What will I do now? Maybe make my own games.....
2-year lurker & fan. Soooo sorry to hear the news. This site has been a big part of my daily routine, and like many others. I'm wondering how I will replace it. I suffer from anxiety, and playing browser games (especially escape games, when you get that "fight or flight" feeling) has been very healing for me.
I'm always amazed at the the civility & consideration of commenters & admins. on this Jayisgames. Other sites like newgrounds are valuable but they can have the social ambience of youtube, yikes! Much appreciation & respect for Jay, Dora, et al for this bright spot in my life- may it continue one somehow, somewhere.
Some of my favorites:
Monkey Go Happy Samurai
The legendary Mateusz Skutnik (his Rizzoli & Isles is way better than the show)
Nekra Psaria
Bart Bonte
Tales of Carmelot, Vortex Point & older Carmel Games
the Rusty Lakes where you don't have to drag corpses around :P
Eskalvos- what an artist!
Detective games like Dirty Split (fab midcentury design) and Bela Kovacks & the Trail of Blood
First Samrost, then William and Sly I&II, and on to Mateusz Skutnik's wonderful work, Rusty Lake - too many to mention. Like many others commenting here, I'm a bit at a loss to think that I won't be stopping by JIG anymore to see what creative madness has been unleashed.
A huge thank you for keeping me puzzled and entertained for so many years!
It's obviously a tough decision and a sad news especially on my side. When I bought the site from Jay in 2013 the business model of the site was 'quality free content' against ads.The revenues from the ads covered a large team of reviewers who searched for the best games, tested them and wrote on them if the games met our standards. Now, in 2016, 55% of the audience block the ads so it's an important part. We already wrote about the risk to close two years ago and people spoke about Patreon. We launched our Patreon page some months ago ( https://www.patreon.com/user?u=915465&u=915465&ty=h ). We're collecting $44 per month from 16 generous patrons. I guess you'll easily understand that our operational costs are more important...
Just discovered the news today and am as shocked as everybody else. One of the long-time visitors, but rare commenters. I discovered Jay is Games in '08 when I was in the early stages of a difficult, multi-year project. During the long grind, JiG was my go-to site . . . whether to blow off a bit of steam, or to indulge in a day-long bout of procrastination. It always worked to limber up my mind and help get me back on task. Loved the games, loved the writers, loved the community.
I could go on . . .
Just wanted to add my voice to the "you will be missed" chorus.
And a few of the highlights I discovered here:
Tesshi-e
Tomatea
The dismantlement series
Skutnik, et al.
Neutral
Red Herring
Samorost
Jonas Kyratzes
indie horror
And so much more . . . thanks!
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
And I thought it was bad when Lazylaces closed down his game review site....
I'm not sure how long I've been visiting J.I.G., but it has brought me uncounted hours of wonder and intrigue (I submit 'Resonance' among others); and many fun, interesting, or at the very least, boredom-reducing games, through the last decade.
My condolences to the crew, and to all who have sailed on her.
Jeff: It is probably too late, but please make one extra front page post with the Patreon link, nice and large. (Where's the big P on the main page? I couldn't find it.)
You just got a $5 pledge from me (again, wish I could do more) and
a) it's said that death can be a great career month plus
b) you know don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.
Maybe JiG can be restored to full health, maybe not. But if it's going to stay up (let alone update) one last push for $$ won't hurt. If politicians, PBS and Wikipedia successfully run on pledge drives maybe JiG can too.
I feel like it's 3rd grade and my best friend is moving away and what am I going to do without her now?? Thank you, JayIsGames, for the wonderful hours of playing games and reading reviews and walkthroughs and humor. I will continue to explore the archives, but it's a very sad day indeed for point-and-clickers, escapers, puzzlers, platform jumpers, and intertubes adventurers alike. I will cherish the memories like a high school yearbook. (Actually, I will probably cherish them more, since I can load up the archives of JIG anytime in a browser and my high school yearbooks are sitting in my basement covered in dust right now probably.) It's been real, JayIsGames.
I've always wanted a t-shirt with the Jayisgames logo nice & big on a dark blue background, with the site name in yellow-orange letters, just like the homepage. I'd gladly pay the going rate for t-shirts & I'm sure lots of others would too. I'd be willing to lay it out for you on a t-shirt printing site if that would help.
Don't know the best place to post this so I guess here will have to do.
Thank you JayisGames for being a phenomenal outlet to play games. Being able to see the creativity and artistic design of so many developers over the years has been wonderful. I am truly sorry and sadden to hear that you guys won't be able to continue and I wish you the best of luck. I am so glad for the memories and the time I have spent on the site. This site has inspired and taught me how to see and analyze games for more than just looks and colors but for see how the different aspects (such as game mechanics), ideas (such as story telling), and passion that it take to make a game. I can't believe this journey has come to an end. Words can't completely convey how much joy and happiness I have found on this site. I have been exposed to so many developers through you guys alone such as Tomatea, Rustylake, No1games, Carmel Games, etc., and I can not thank you enough for the love of game YOU have helped but inside me.
Thanks JayisGames for all you have done for me. I wish I could better describe how much I have love being a visitor to your site but hopefully the message has been made clear.
Goodbye JayisGames, I will miss you with all my heart.
~~Aaron
Ok, I'm willing to give this a try as well, so count me in on another 5$. :)
Sorry, I wish, it could be more, but I'm still one of those countless struggling (complaining, obviously) students without income… Guess you know what I mean, it's that regularly-nearly-broke-student-cliché, meh… *sigh* :/
Well, but since I'm not here to complain and since I'm a person irresponsible enough to spend some money on a Humble Bundle now and then nevertheless, I guess, I could try supporting JiG instead ;)
Come to think of it, you've given me countless hours of entertainment over the years, so… not much difference to buying the occasional game, book or movie and why not paying a small amount for your work on spotting a great selection of games and your fun-to-read-reviews.
Well, let's just try this one more time and see how it works out *fingers crossed* :)
P.S.: I don't really mind the ads that much. JiG is on my Adblock-whitelist and I always found the annoyance-level to be low enough… ^^ So, if it helps you, why not?
Nessi, as another small contributor (also because I'm currently a student again), I am also a little bummed that people who claimed they would help didn't and that my small amount doesn't go very far.
But look at it this way: nearly 20K people have read the goodbye post. Dozens have commented. If just a fraction of those readers each gave $5/mo each, as we have, JiG wouldn't be in this situation.
JiG has been such an integral part of my life for so many years, I don't think it's a difficulty at all to give a small monthly amount in exchange for the great benefit I receive in exchange. So who knows! Maybe we can jumpstart our favorite game site and make something happen!
This site is like a Christmas stocking that I keep on my mantle all year and, if I've been a good girl, I might find something really cool to play with. Now, I feel like I just found a stocking full of black coal! 0~0 I have to say too that I will be so disappointed in everyone if they can't pull together and fund this site. There are enough of us that we could give as little as $1 or $2 a month each and make it happen. I pledged $7 a few days ago on Patreon. The truth is that I never saw the original posts regarding the site closing and the original requests for funding or I would have done this a long time ago. I have tunnel vision when it comes to the games! Well, Jeff, Dora and everyone else who has made this site great, thank you for the diversion (and stocking stuffers). You'll be missed.

The "Patreon" thing just breezed over my head. And now we suffer. Donate is difficult, for me, so limited income. 750./mo. I do tend to not pay attention as I should . But, if I can spare say 3 dollars a month, Not donate, as that is too unstable, but as a membership, so it's consistent . There are so dang many people that say they adore this site. Surely even 5k of easily 15k plus, could spare $3/mo. would make a difference? I just really hate giving up.
Dora will answer to all today but I can confirm the site will continue if the first reasonable patreon goal of $3,5k per month is reached. I would want to express my deep thanks to all your kind messages. I'm very sad of the situation...
Also, please, as I begin to see more and more patrons who pledged, feel free to post there your pledge in order to have your badges because it's hard for me sometimes to link a patreon name with a jayisgames commenter. Thanks in advance.
(Badges are updated once a day)
Bye JIG...
Though I fully understand all reasons, I won't become a patreon... For everybody that has the money available, please do.
But one of the biggest reasons I came to this site all these years, was the enormous amount of (mostly) free games, great reviews, along with the helpfull comments.
Honestly, I hope you will raise the amount of money needed. The littlest thing I can do (and just did - though too late) is to disable the adblock. Sorry for that. It's enabled by default.
With regards,
A fan from The Netherlands, for many years.
I had adblock enabled too. I never think of disabling it unless a site pops up a request that I do so. For sure I would have disabled it for jayisgames. (And I have done so now, probably too late ... sorry.)
And I've done the Patreon thing too. I hope enough people come back and see the big sign, and act on it.
I was super sad to hear about this, and I intend to donate, but I did just want to suggest that the main page get a link to the patreon site. I kind of stumbled in here, just to see what people were talking about now that the game feed is (hopefully temporarily) frozen, and I was delighted to find a way to help.
I'm sure many others would lend a hand as well, so long as they're made aware of the opportunity.
In any case, I mostly lurk, but I just wanted to say that I love this site, the great reviewers, and the countless helpful players willing to give you a hint (or just hang out and witness the POP)
Do let's get this done.
I am so sorry it has come to this. JiG has been a part of my online life for many years now, and I feel privileged to have been part of the reviewing and writing team. I have so many happy memories of interacting with other team members, and am particularly fond of the review that Tricky and I co-wrote around the Santa Claw.
I found JiG after exhausting Myst, searching for any games that might be similar. Learning that Myst was of the point-and-click genre led me here after some online searching and it was like discovering a goldmine, a treasure chest, a cornucopia of games! It was heaven!
Jay, you created something awesome. JiG is unique, fun, interactive, vibrant, mind-opening, a go-to site for games of all kinds, just brilliant. Thank you! Thank you. And you also provided a platform for game developers to showcase their work, a lot of which has been genius. I bet they will miss JiG as much as the JiG community will.
Dora, you've been an amazing contributor and your writing has made me laugh and, at times, wince but overall you have inspired me. Thank you.
I will miss the fresh content on JiG, but am grateful that this site will still be live so I can revisit my all time favourites, of which there are many.
As one member of the community wrote, the ending of activity on JiG will leave a [ginormous] big hole.
I'm not gonna cry. I'm not.
Hugs xo
The Patreon link should have been put up (1) years ago, (2) much more prominently, and (3) with occasional reminder articles. For this revival campaign to have any hope of success, the Patreon link needs to be posted to the site-closing announcement. Yes, I know it's in the sidebar, but it also needs to be explicitly called out in the article itself.
(I became a Patreon supporter as soon as the possibility was presented, but that was, what, last November? And then the link actually went away at some point - I remember looking for it in March and it was nowhere to be found. As unpleasant as it is, the key to the public radio funding format is near-constant reminders and pledge drives.)
Hi folks,
Thanks again for all your kind words and support. I appreciate that JiG has meant so much to so many people, and though I am no longer part of it, I hope that this Patreon campaign can come to fruition so that Jeff can revive the site and continue to make it a place that provides so much enjoyment to people, as well as cover all the costs he has so tirelessly put into running it since buying it several years ago. JayisGames has always been a labour of love for the people behind it, and I wish all the best for it and everyone involved for the future. :)
I will miss this place. I've learned about so many great games here, and have even been playing a game hosted on the site which I will have to abandon as it has updated everywhere but here and will never update again. I have loved this site so much, but have only recently thought to register, and now I feel bad for not doing so earlier.
Hello Dave, I don't think it's the place where promoted other sites while we try to survive at least to have still the light.
Please feel free loyal members to give ideas on how could be JiG now?
I mean I'm sure this site can be still existed if the community wants it still alive. For that we need to think to another way of working. The main costs came from the article writers who did a fantastic job during many years. But unfortunately their high rates are not compatible with the drop in revenues.
So maybe we can see with games posted by members and with a short description and not a long text?
It will mean every member will have the possibility to create an article (with JiG standards for the image) with a long or short description and even hosting the game on our server.
What do you think?
Fair point - well made. A bit insensitive of me to ask on the 'Support' thread.
I like your idea of how the site could survive. I wrote a few reviews a couple of years ago in a segment called 'You are Games Community edition' or something and they were published. It was essentially pick 3 or 4 of your favourite games and write a short review of each of them.
Couldn't the site exist in this way, inviting Community members to submit short reviews of new games they have come across? There would be no walkthroughs or anything, the only work the JIG staff would need to do is turn them into HTML (and perhaps a quick grammar/spelling check). You have an entire army of reviewers in this community, most of whom write well looking at the forum posts, who would happily submit a review of games they like, the only payment necessary being the pride of contributing and seeing their review online - I know I would contribute enthusiastically!
I would be happy to have a paywall or subscription paid directly to JIG.
I'd like it better than giving part of the proceeds to Patreon.
There are already more than 26,000 views of this farewell comment. If everyone paid even just $1, there would be profit.
I don't like seeing all the lamentations here while there is only $180 pledged on Patreon. There must be a better way.
:(
What Scaper said. Well sorta
I can do a I one time thing--probably more than just one time but maybe not the same amount every time. What I can't do is promise money going forward that I may not have.
Give us a Paypal link or something so those of us who can't do subscriptions can at least do what we can RIGHT NOW.
JiG is for me a community so if the community wants to see JiG still alive I will see (during the next days) how to allow members to write on their preferred games.
Of course the comments sections will be still there and as Questioner said we can keep the walkthroughs too.
The good think with that is: some members like escape games, some casual games etc so we'll be able to cover more different sensibilities. Also, members could write an article on a game to request help like a mobile game or any other game. I need to look how to do that, it's not easy as the site is not built with wordpress or an easy cms like wordpress.
If we go with this option, we'll only need $1,000 from Patreon or Paypal to cover the expenses.
this website is way back in 2003. incredible so i love jayisgames.com i miss this website and JIG team are awesomeness i play 99 rooms. weird games. webtoy. and more games include downloadble games like dark parables. dawn series. and more games. so you guys are the best and make more money grow this website and BTW who is the casualgameplay.com looks like a download games. so thank you for make me cry about this website. okay so i will play more games this website thank you. :)
Just read the news and immediately clicked the Patreon link and added a sponsorship. I don't know whether enough folks will join in to make JiG sustainable, but I had to do my part. I can't begin to count how many great games and creators I stumbled across due to JiG reviews - starting with the Grow series way back when.
Good luck Jeff and Dora!
Very sorry to hear of the changes. I have thoroughly enjoyed your site and will continue to do so. I have lost many useful hours of worktime playing games on your site. I wish Dora and the others best of luck in your future ventures. Thank you for your work of this great game site.
