DoraGrow Nano 4What do you get when you mix cake with eyeballs, hearts, and fanged box monsters? Grow Nano 4, of course! On of Eyezmaze brings you this itty-bitty installment in the popular Grow series of puzzle games about adding stuff to other stuff, like Top Chef by way of a Beatles music video narrated by Hunter S Thompson and drawn by the world's most adorable children's book illustrator. Just click on the icons and try to figure out the correct order to use them in; the goal is to literally grow a very special little creature, which will only happen if you can figure out when to use what so everything has a chance to "level up" properly. It's the age old question; what came first, the cake or the creepily fixated eyeball-mounted-on-a-hunk-of-rock? Scientists need to know!

With only four ingredients, Grow Nano 4 isn't the biggest entry in the series, but since it was made just to highlight a weird and wonderful beastie created by a fan of the games, we can forgive it. Besides, just because it's short doesn't mean it's easy; like all Eyezmaze titles, you'll have to think outside the box (literally this time) if you want to figure out the correct order of ingredients. It's more than a welcome surprise, and should serve to tide you over until the next hefty Grow game arrives. Until then, it's clear that On knows just the recipe we need for fun!

It is definitely neat for sure.

Also, I was able to do it pretty quickly without a walkthrough.

HOW DID I WIN WITHOUT A WALKTHROUGH? omo I need one for the 3 item installments! D:

I'm actually quite proud of myself for getting all the things on max on my first go :')

I never did understand how these games worked. Apparently every failure contains hints for success, but I can't make sense of them.

Here's my first run...

Click the box. It appears in the middle of the base.

Click the heart. It appears orbiting in the air above the base.
The box levels up into a ? box, which appears to be a mouth-in-the-box.

Click the cake. It appears beneath the ? box.
The heart levels up and generates three other hearts, which spin in place in various areas.

Click the eye. It appears on the base, with four lights under it: blue-black-black-black-blue-black-black-black. Not at all sure if that's important.
The cake levels up and doubles in size.

Final tally: heart lv. 4, cake lv. 2, eye lv. 1, box lv. 2.

I'm not certain how any of that is supposed to hint at the correct pattern. Could someone more "into" the series give me a bit of explanation?

Second try.

Since the eye was so low-level on my first run, I decided to add it first. It appeared with the same light combination as before.

Box second. Nothing happened.

Heart third. Box leveled up like before, but still nothing with the eye.

Cake last. Hearts leveled up like before; nothing else.

Levels at the end: heart 4, cake 1, eye 1, box 2.

Got it my first try without a walkthrough! Nevermind that there are only four parts :P

SonicLover, usually the animations aren't intended to be hints. What you should keep your eye on is which items raise the levels of the other items, and then prioritize them based on those chain reactions. Typically, that makes most Grow games a little trial-and-error based, but there is logic behind it. For example:

Since your eye lvl is only 1, you can infer that it's a late item to be used, as no other item raised its level.

It seems you may be overthinking it a little :)

Well, I haven't noticed any chain-reactions yet... so for my third try, I'll take the sequence from my second try (which had the eye first) and apply it in the reverse order. Maybe something will react to something else.

Cake first. It appears.

Heart second. It appears, cake levels up. Nothing else happens.

Box third. Both cake and heart level up.

Eye last. Cake and box level up. Can't tell if anything affects anything else.

Final levels: heart 4, cake 4, eye 1, box 2.

Clearly I need to experiment more. For my next try I think I'll try cake, box, heart, eye.

...Wow. Apparently cake-box-heart-eye was the correct solution all along! I guess the fact that the cake took a lot of levels was worth observing after all.

Wow, second try. That never happens. Must be the easiest Grow yet.

With 4 items, there are 24 (4*3*2*1) possible permutations. The probability of getting the winning solution on your first try is 1/24.

9th try, working through the permutations.

Cute little game.

Whoa, I too got it on the first try. That never happens with these Grow games. I...somehow...feel cheated...hrmm.

Oooh, a new Grow game! Short and easy, but still really fun.

@SonicLover:
I had trouble understanding these games at first, too. What I do is write down the order I put things in, and then the levels of each item at the end. That usually helps me see which items need to go where in order to get them to max. It's kind of a lot of work, but it's so satisfying when you finally figure it out!

Second try, and I usually suck at these!

I'm disappointed in this game. Usually there are a variety of ways each element act together, but in this case there was only one.

Briguy May 2, 2011 8:42 PM

I agree with Isu the Mule above. There didn't seem to be any experimentation. You either win or you're wrong, without anything in between.

Reply

@Isu: This is no different than the previous Grow Nano games. The Nano is the indication that this isn't as complex as ones from the main Grow series, and that it doesn't have more than a single solution.

Got what I was expecting from this - an extremely brief but enjoyable diversion.

Oh yay, I actually maxed out all levels on my second run! :D I feel so accomplished...

I've explained the logic in a different Grow post, but it is not trial-and-error. There is a structure to it.

Basically

each element has a set time to, well, grow. If it takes 3 moves for an element to mature, activating it with 2 moves to go will mean it won't kick in. That's a Level Up. If it matures into something which then interacts with something else for another Level Up, that means both elements have to be ready to go *at the same time*.
That means you have to pay attention to *when* elements do their thing, and what they might potentially interact with.

Every time I follow the link, I get redirected to the Eyezmaze front page for some reason, so I can't play the game. D:

[Looks like there may be an issue with the Eyezmaze site right now. You might want to try again later. Or, as an alternative and temporary fix, try this link in Firefox, it worked for me: http://bit.ly/iiIMP4 -Jay]

Where can I buy that adorable statue? o.o

Reply

Hmm I got the "win" combination but there is still a question-marked picture above the game itself. Seems to me there is still something else we can see besides the win bit.

Reply

So i figured that since there were only 4 choices, there would only be 24 possible combinations... I made a list in a spreadsheet and started working from the top down, then about halfway through I switched and started going from the bottom up. On my TWENTY-FOURTH attempt I finally got it right.... geeez.

Reply

I finished in second attempt, too. Probably more pure luck than practice, although the clues of what levels I reached the first time did help a bit.

I love eyemaze's "GROW" webtoys... so was disappointed at this one's brevity. Maybe it is an appetizer for something larger next course?

Reply

By the way... the photo image of the statue made a very nice "prize" for finishing!

yup i figureed it out

ON occasionally adds easter eggsmini-animations and hatchlingsto his blog. Currently there is a "progress report" up that is slowly, but steadily, growing nearer to completion (or maybe that's my hopes-fueled anticipation playing tricks on my eyes?)
