One Of You
Wake up. You're in a dark room. In some sort of cabin. The power's off. It's bolted shut. You search yourself in vain yet find no memory of who you are, how you got here. Did I mention the cabin is haunted by a strange creature? Is your heart beating faster and the adrenaline coursing through your veins preparing you for a fight, or have your fight-or-flight reflexes also poured out of your paralyzed mind into the darkness?
The games have only just begun when your first choice is thrust upon on you. Will take on the cryptically named 'Scenario A' or 'Scenario B' first? (Personally, I'd recommend playing as A to begin, but I digress.) You might think (hope) that your situation would improve once you finish fumbling around in the dark and get the power on, but a series of locked doors, powerful toxic gas, and a horrific gruesome act caught on tape only magnify the urge to flee for the hills and then some. Explore carefully and make your choices wisely. Missing certain key observations can cost you anything from a large chunk of lore to, shall we say, a significant drop in the health of the protagonist.
After bringing your choice of Scenario A or B to its conclusion, you'll unlock a third plot, C. This side plot takes place several months after the original. You play as a woman named Tabatha, and fresh on a new job, are sent to track down complaints about one of the survivors from the cabin. Little do you know, the child within the house holds a deep and dangerous secret...if you can track him down and convince him to share it.
Navigation is clean and simple in this game. Use the arrow keys to get around and Z or enter to choose options and advance dialogue. There are many save slots available to preserve your progress...in case you're too spooked to finish it in one go. Press escape or X accesses the menu to set volume and other options. Note that this game is produced using the software RPG maker, so there are a number of superfluous elements like HP, Magic, etc. that play no role in the game and can be ignored.
One of You has a complicated storyline and character development - so rich, in fact, that ZeroDigitZ felt compelled to give you a special treat and craft a page explaining more about all the game's characters. This naturally comes with major spoilers, so it is best enjoyed after you complete the scenario(s) of your choice - hopefully, all three!
Although my experience with the game is largely positive, it does fall disappointingly short in the scare/horror factor. It toys with you like a perpetual Charlie Brown football moment in this respect, over and over. It's not going to terrorize you like Forgotten Hill or The Last Door series, even though (spoiler alert) people will die. Then again, maybe it had something to do with playing the game in the middle of the day in the safety of broad daylight. For the brave of heart, you'll have to try enjoying the game in the dead of night with the lights turned off and headphones turned up, and let me know if you have a different experience!
You may be able to choose your scenario in One of You, but don't be lulled into any false sense of complacency. You cannot escape your fate.
Warning: While not excessively bloody, the game carries mature themes that some players may find disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.
