For all the daydreaming we do about our ideal apocalypse scenario, sometimes it's worth remembering that maybe the total extinction of the human race could have some somber moments. The team over at Games 121 want us to feel that loss. The Last Heart does a better job than most tugging at your, ahem, heartstrings. You play as a tiny nanobot implanted in the last human being's chest cavity, moving with [WASD] and firing with the [arrow] keys, blasting away at an ever encroaching wave of bacteria that have already claimed everyone else. It's an infinite shooter game, so the goal isn't to win. You're just holding out for as long as you can.
The Last Heart boasts a gorgeous retro art style and tight controls. Ammo is infinite and your ship doesn't take damage, so the game's most precious resource is time. It's the snap decision of where to allocate your laser blasts, and for how long to focus on each area of encroachment, that gives the game its tension and challenge. Speed and attack power upgrade automatically as you level up, so unfortunately, you don't get to choose what new toys to play with as the game goes on. It is, however, extremely satisfying cutting down swathes of bug-eyed pathogens and collecting precious upgrade points. Think of it like a light Bubble Tanks game. The Last Heart should keep shooter fans happy and apocalypse fans questioning if the End Times are all they're cracked up to be.
Unfortunately, like all of his other games: this game is some years old, not new at all, he upload them again because of "mochi", I don't know what happened. I hope some people won't delete and reupload their games just to be reviewed here, it would be awkward.
Not a good shooter, or game in general.
The main problem is that upgrades are arbitrary, not choosable; if I actually had some say in how exactly the nanobot levels up, I would feel like death at the end is a result of my actions, deserved because I didn't think strategically enough. As it is, it just feels like the game got tired of being played and decided to just be as cheap as possible.
Truly HORRIBLE.
WASD and Arrows? Just give us a freaking autofire or use mouse, they exist you know?
